Taking deposits as a photographer

By Abrar · Updated · 4 min read

A deposit holds the date for the client and protects you if they cancel. Ask for it when they say yes to your quote, and show it as a payment on the final invoice so the balance is clear.

1Why ask for one

Once a date is booked you turn other work away. A deposit covers that. It also shows the client is serious.

2How much

Many photographers ask for a share of the total, often between a quarter and a half. Pick an amount that covers your lost chance of other work, and say it in the quote.

3Say what happens if they cancel

Write in the quote whether the deposit is refunded, and until when. Clients accept clear rules.

4Show it on the final invoice

List the full price, then the deposit paid with its date, then the balance due. The client sees nothing is double-charged.

Questions people ask

Is a deposit the same as a retainer?

They are close. A deposit holds a booking and counts toward the price. Use the word your contract uses.

Should the deposit be refundable?

That is your choice. Say it clearly in the quote.
