Best free invoice apps (2026)

By Abrar · Updated · 6 min read

The best free invoice app depends on what you need to be free. Wave and Invoice Ninja do not cap the number of invoices on their free plans. Zoho Invoice allows 500 invoices a year. Bookipi allows 3 documents a month. We read each company's own pricing page on Nov 03 2026. Plans change, so check the page before you choose.

1How we checked

We looked at free plans only. Every figure below comes from the company's own pricing page, read on Nov 03 2026, and the page is named in the table. We do not use star ratings or reviews. We make a free invoice generator and are building an invoicing app, so we have an interest in this topic. Where a page did not make a limit clear, we say so instead of guessing.

2The free plans side by side

AppWhat is freeWhat is not freePage read on Nov 03 2026
Wave (Starter plan)Unlimited estimates, invoices, bills and bookkeeping recordsOnline card payments cost 2.9% + $0.60 per card payment (3.4% + $0.60 for Amex). Pro is $19 a month or $190 a yearwaveapps.com/pricing

Invoice NinjaUnlimited invoices, up to 5 clients, 11 templates and your logoA "Created by Invoice Ninja" notice stays. Pro is $14 a month or $140 a yearinvoiceninja.com/pricing-plans
Bookipi3 documents a month, including estimates, and 3 e-signatures a monthMore than 3 documents a month needs Starter: $9.99 a month, or $91.20 for a yearbookipi.com/pricing
Free Invoice Generator (ours)Unlimited PDF invoices in your browser, with no sign-upIt does not save invoices on a server, take payments or send reminders. Each PDF has a small "Made with InvoiceWren" linefreeinvoicegenerator.tools

3Wave

Wave is the choice if you want unlimited invoices and estimates and also want simple bookkeeping in the same place. Its page says the free plan lets you create unlimited estimates, invoices, bills and bookkeeping records. The cost shows up when your client pays by card through Wave: the page lists a fee on each card payment. We could not tell from the page which plan lets you add your logo and remove Wave branding, so check that before you rely on it.

4Zoho Invoice

Zoho Invoice suits you if you send fewer than about 41 invoices a month, which is what 500 a year comes to, and you want a free plan from a large company. The free plan allows two users and three projects. Invoices carry Zoho's branding. The page names no paid plans, and it sends people who need more to the company's support address.

5Invoice Ninja

Invoice Ninja is a good fit if you have a small number of clients and want unlimited invoices. The free plan stops at 5 clients, so it works for a freelancer with a few regular customers and less well for a business with a long client list. You can add your own logo, but the Invoice Ninja notice stays until you pay for Pro.

6Bookipi

Bookipi's free plan is for very low volume. You get 3 documents a month in total, and estimates count toward that number, so a month with two estimates and two invoices is already over the limit. The count resets every 30 days. If you send more than that, the paid plans start at $9.99 a month.

7A free invoice generator in your browser

If all you need today is a PDF invoice, you do not need an app. Our free invoice generator makes a PDF in your browser with no sign-up and no limit, and what you type stays in your browser. The trade-off is that it only makes the document: it does not store your clients, send reminders or take payments. We make it, so weigh our view with that in mind.

8InvoiceWren, coming soon

InvoiceWren is our app. It is not out yet, and you can join the waitlist on invoicewren.com. The plan is a free plan that lets you send 5 invoices a month, with estimates, drafts and PDF downloads unlimited, and no cut of your payments. Do not choose it until you can use it. Anything not released yet is labeled coming soon on our site.

9Which one should you pick?

Pick Wave if you want unlimited invoices and bookkeeping and are happy to pay card fees when clients pay online. Pick Zoho Invoice if you send under 500 invoices a year and want a big company's free plan. Pick Invoice Ninja if you have five clients or fewer. Pick Bookipi only if you send a few documents a month. Pick a browser generator if you only need a clean PDF now. Whatever you pick, read what is not free before you move your records into it.

Questions people ask

Is there an invoice app that is completely free?

Each free plan has a limit or a cost somewhere: a cap on invoices or clients, branding on your documents, or fees on card payments. The table above shows where each one draws the line.

Can I invoice for free without an app?

Yes. Use the free invoice generator or a free Word, Excel or Google Docs invoice template.

Do free invoice apps take a fee when my client pays?

Some do. Wave's free plan lists a fee on each card payment. You can avoid card fees by listing Zelle or your bank details on the invoice, if your clients are happy to pay that way.

How often do these plans change?

Often. The facts here are from Nov 03 2026. Check the company's page for today's plan before you decide.
