Questions about receipts

What is a receipt?

A receipt is proof that a payment was made. It shows who paid, how much, when, and how. It is not a bill: an invoice asks for money, and a receipt confirms it arrived.

What should a receipt include?

Your business name and contact details, the client’s name, the date, what the payment was for, the amount paid and how it was paid (cash, check, Zelle, card). A receipt number or the invoice number it belongs to helps both sides find it later.

Do I need to give a receipt for every payment?

It is good practice, and many clients need one for their own records. If a client pays in cash or by check, a receipt is especially useful. Ask your accountant about rules for your state.

What if the client paid only part of the bill?

Type the amount you received in “Amount received”. The receipt shows the full total, the amount paid, and the balance still due.

Can I make a receipt without an invoice?

Yes. Leave “Receipt for invoice number” empty and list what the payment was for. It works for a sale made on the spot.

Is it free, and is my information kept?

It is free, with no sign-up and no limit. Everything you type stays in your browser and is not sent to us. We say how in the Privacy page.
