Questions about change orders

What is a change order?

A change order is a written agreement to change a job that is already agreed. It says what is added or removed and what that does to the price. Both sides sign it before the extra work starts.

When do I need one?

Any time the work changes after the client said yes: extra rooms, a different material, a new request halfway through. Writing it down protects you and the client from a dispute later.

What should a change order include?

The job or estimate it changes, a short description of each change, the amount for each (added or taken off), the new total, and a line for the client to sign and date.

How do I take something off the price?

Type a negative amount on that line, for example -120. The change total adds up the additions and the deductions.

Is a change order the same as a new estimate?

No. An estimate prices a whole job before it starts. A change order only covers what is different from the job already agreed.

Is it free, and is my information kept?

It is free, with no sign-up and no limit. Everything you type stays in your browser and is not sent to us.

Starting a new job? Begin with an estimate. When the work is done, send an invoice.
